What is BVMAC?

BVMAC (Bourse des Valeurs Mobilières de l'Afrique Centrale) is the regional market for CEMAC's 6 countries: Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Chad, CAR, Equatorial Guinea. Based in Douala since the 2019 merger with Douala Stock Exchange. Regulated by COSUMAF.

With ~15 listed companies and a market cap of ~1,200 billion FCFA (~€1.8B), BVMAC is 10x smaller than BRVM. But precisely that modest size and the thin analyst coverage make it potentially inefficient — and thus interesting for alpha hunters.

Main listings

The bond segment is dominated by sovereign issues (Gabon, Cameroon, Chad) with 7-year yields typically 6-8% — an attractive risk premium vs BRVM (~4-6%).

Risk-return profile

Limited liquidity

Daily volumes are ~10x lower than BRVM. On some lines, trades happen only a few times per week. Practice: avoid market orders, use limit orders and moderate sizes (no more than ~5% of the line's daily average).

Oil price correlation

CEMAC is heavily hydrocarbon-exposed (Gabon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Chad). Currencies are pegged to the euro but public finances, bank deposits and corporate revenues are sensitive to oil. A scenario of sustained $50 oil would weigh on several issuers.

Information asymmetry

Analyst coverage is far thinner than BRVM. Corporate filings are published but rarely synthesised. This creates opportunities (undervalued lines), but demands deeper DD from the investor.

How to access from the diaspora?

  1. Via a licensed BVMAC broker (EDC Investment, Attijari Securities, Finexus Capital): dedicated KYC account.
  2. Via a BRVM broker with BVMAC routing: some multi-market brokers offer this, at extra commission.
  3. Via an infrastructure platform like Inopay: a unified KYC gives access to BRVM and BVMAC at partner brokers, no admin duplication.

Diaspora strategies

Warning: BVMAC remains a frontier market. Position sizes must match liquidity, and a 3-5 year minimum horizon is recommended.

Outlook 2026-2028

Positive catalysts: COSUMAF reform announced, technical interconnection project with BRVM (MoU signed 2025), potential IPOs (MTN Cameroon). Watch: execution quality and institutional investor appetite.
